School counselors provide developmentally appropriate services to all students through classroom instruction, small group sessions, and individual support as needed. They use data analysis to implement targeted interventions that address specific student needs. Using the ASCA National Model (2019) as a guide, school counselors provide direct and indirect services.
Instruction: Implement classroom lessons on specific skills related to academic, career, and social-emotional developmental domains as determined through the program annual outcome goal. Union Public Schools uses a combination of Second Step Curriculum and Hope Lessons to teach SEL to support all students.
Appraisal: Guiding students through an inquiry of interests and skills to support a hope-filled career/college pathway for the future. Be on the lookout for interest surveys, multiple elective course options, skill inventories
Advisement: Assisting students and families in choosing coursework based on personal goals and interests. We provide coursework recommendations, career fairs, and ensure exposure to new interests through electives and exploratory units such as STEM/STEAM and after-school clubs.
Counseling: Short-term counseling for students based on student or parent request. We provide solution-focused, compassionate, empathetic, brief counseling sessions as needed: crisis-support, stress-management, peer-mediation, organizational support, grade checks, and address other needs.
Consultation: Seek and provide consult from school professionals, mental-health experts, and advisors as needed. Ethical decision making is of the utmost importance in education and school counseling.
Collaboration: Partnering with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive school counseling program while strengthening the school-community relationship for positive student outcomes. We assess needs annually, participate in Child Study Teams with teachers and administrators, leadership membership, PTSA membership, etc.
